Opening independent Study Paragraph 2!!

Why is ‘300’ representing males with old fashion Ideologies? Is the New Man Dead?

Is the new man really dead? ‘300’ is representing males with masculine ideologies, thus showing men more dominant than any other being. Although men in 300 are seen territorial the message put across is the basics of men’s stereotype of being
'Selfish, Loutish and inconsiderate... [They like] drinking, football and fucking, and in that order of preference ... [and are]... defensively masculine' [1] in modern day. My study will base that are these stereotypes giving the conclusion of the new man being dead or is it that the new man is already dead and the old fashion ideologies are reborn to put women back in their place. The 2006 film 300 directed by Zack Synder promotes male violence by destroying the values of ‘more acceptable and appealing version of masculinity’ [2] shown from the new man. The new man was created first in the 1970’s but has been recreated in a variety of forms since then. He is seen to be represented with more of the feminine ideologies as he is in touch with his inner femininity and ‘attempts to form non – oppressive relationships with women, children and other men’[3].

Essay Plan

As my independent study focuses on the new man, with particular reference to 300 the film, I will be focuses on this text as u will be researching why 300 is representing men with old ideologies of being more powerful and superior than women. The main focus will be on how masculine each character is shown as, including making main reference to the protagonist (Leonidas). Since the 1980’s to present, men were seen to be more feminine and caring. The film 300 shows men are more dominant and territorial. My main aim is to see is this text referring to the type of society or making reference to show how men were.

This could affect the type of audience they attract as the audience may see the characters as role models with power and masculinity. The body of each character is shown through their half naked costumes and is concentrating on the muscles as their armour. Audience seem this is the way to be powerful and consume the idea that muscle is greater than mind.

The representations are mixed from the common masculine man and some scene of the new man and caring but with a patriarchal society and some elements of the masculine man is present within the chosen new man within the film.

The first section of the essay will include what the new man is and how is had been changing within society. As men would prefer to be seen as strong and hide their feelings, some men do open their feelings.

Further on within my essay I will include the other texts that I will be making reference to. The main text that I will be talking about which contains the main ideology of the new man is a film produced in 1987 called ‘Three Men & a Baby’. This film is about three bachelors find themselves forced to take care of a baby left by one of the guy's girlfriends. This film contains representation of common men in society, and when a baby falls into their hands, their ideologies and values change, by being more nurturing and caring for the child. Another text that I will be looking at will be ‘Troy’. This film is a similar genre which could contains elements of the new man.

(h,Id,R,G)

The next part I will need to be concentrating on is talking about how characters within 300 are represented.

I will be talking about how the new man could be dead within the text by looking at the majority of the 300 Spartans which are all represented as masculine men.

The Persian King is the only character within the film that I will be talking about that has elements of the new man.

The outline of the story will be included within the essay with some quotes which are said by characters to represent the new man being dead or present. The main way masculine men can be found will be through the types of shots and effects used within the film. I will be going through my blog to look at analysed senesce where power men are presented.

Things to include and look at for representations:

  • Costumes
  • Make-up
  • Language

(M,R,Id, N)

The next section of the essay will be a smaller section as I will be just talking about the audience and how they could be influenced by the film.

Some quotes will be used by reviews and comments of the movie. This section may even be linked to the previous paragraph and will lead to SHEP. Such as ‘Troy’ is another movie made in 2004, which could have influenced the new man in a negative way, but also by containing elements of the new man, such as costumes, but the attitude of the male is different to what he is seen as.

I will be talking about:

  • Audience theory
  • Costumes in Troy
  • Quotes

(A,h, Id, M)

Further on, in this section I will be talking taking in to reference the Acronym SHEP. I will be talking about feminism and how that had affected male representations and ideologies relating to the male backlash, which had changed male identity to the new man.

In will be linking to the film ‘Three Men & a Baby’ (1984), as in the 1980s this is when the male backlash was present.

I will be talking about:

  • Three Men & a Baby – How nurturing roles have taken place, and that men are able to show similar roles that women have as a house wife.
  • Feminism- First, second and third wave of feminism.
  • Male Backlash – How men have changed towards women’s roles and how men have shown dominance or the new values of the new man.

(SHEP, Id, R)

Last section, I will be talking about how the New Man ideologies are weaker or stronger than the masculine man, by taking reference from Troy and Three Men & a Baby. I will include many quotes to show how the new man can be seen.

Is the representation of men fair in 300 and accurate by looking at the previous making of the film which is made in the 1960s. ‘300 Spartans 1962’. If this film has the new man present or if the masculine roles are present. The other main thing I will be looking at is the types of shots and effects used, which emphasises scenes and male dominance is the 2006 version.

If the 1962 version has any elements of this?
Does is show masculinity?
Is it a slow pacing film?

I will be using quotes from the film and will be looking at the view and comments on each film and comparing each film.

(SHEP, R, Id, M)

Conclusion

In the conclusion of my essay, I will be going over all the findings i am come across with the new man and will be relating it back to my essay question: Why is ‘300’ representing males with old fashion Ideologies? Is the New Man Dead?

I will be looking at:

Is the new man stronger?
Is the masculine man Strong?
Is the genre of the film what affected how the males are represented?
Is the new man really dead?

Quotes wills be used mainly to give evidence for each question

Historical Text (Independent Study)

Three Men & A Baby (1987)
Director: Leonard Niomy
Plot: Three bachelors find themselves forced to take care of a baby left by one of the guy's girlfriends

Quote: They changed her diapers. She changed their lives

This film focuses on three men who live together as flat mates. They are all working men are are represented as typical men towards women.
for example, a the beggining of the film, one of the men is dating a women, but another women is iterested in him and states that he is single.
Although these men ay have been represented as typical men at the beggining of the film, these men,s ideologies and values changes as another females affects their lives. Not a seductive women, but a little baby girl.
At first the men don't want anything to do withthe baby and don't know anything.
For Example
'I can draw a design structure, so i should be able to change a baby's diaper'.
This quote clearly shows that men think they can do anything by realting to their male role pf working. But its not that simple.
Throughout the film each male has a responsibility and trys to learn as the film progresses.
One issue through the film where the drug dealers trsh the house, is that they care about if the baby is hurt. this shows a sign of men's emotions and love for the baby.
This can link to my study as the new man is present through the nuturing and caring of the baby.

1970's Texts

Normally the man helps the women, but in this case it looks like the women is running around saving men and women from blood thirsty aliens. She is going around killing them.
This shows that women are gaining power showing feminism has arrived.

There are some shots of women, but eah shows either shows a scene of a women scared or worried, this shows that women are frightened and need protection.
